Casa da Música, a concert hall shaped like a rock
Rem Koolhaas designed Casa da Música as an angular white shape that looks nothing like a traditional concert hall, dropped into a plain, ordinary square well outside the old town. Inside, a corrugated glass wall lets you see straight through the main auditorium to the city beyond, and a tour of the building takes you past rooms tiled in blue azulejos next to raw concrete. Even without a concert playing, the building itself is worth the detour from the Ribeira crowds.
